Fire ants are really good at working and surviving. Now scientists are finding out something new and interesting about how they behave when they are all moving together. Some researchers in Spain have seen that fire ants can make waves when they move in groups. These waves happen when ants near each other start moving in the direction. It is like when birds fly together or fish swim together.

This study was done by people at the University of Barcelona. They wrote about it in the Journal of Applied Physics. The scientists think that this can help us understand how things that are alive and things that are not alive can move together in ways.

What Is Active Matter

Active matter is when things that are alive or not alive move around because they have energy inside them. Examples of matter are bacteria, birds flying together, fish swimming together and ants living in colonies.

When things are part of matter they follow simple rules and they move around because of those rules. When you look at all of them together they make complicated patterns. Fire ants are an example of this. Each ant does its thing but it also pays attention to the ants around it.

The researchers said that when ants are close to each other they slow down. When more ants slow down, more ants come to that place and it gets crowded. It might look like the ants are not moving. They are actually moving and stopping all the time. On average ants move for half of the time and they are still for the other half.

This makes a balance between the ants that are moving and the ants that are in clusters.

Two Kinds Of Motion

The study found out that fire ants can move in two ways. The first way is when they make clusters and most of the ants are still. The second way is when all the ants start moving

The researchers got really interested in the way when they saw fire ants moving between two pieces of plexiglass. The ants made waves that moved up the column like ripples in water. These waves were strongest at the bottom where there were a lot of ants.

The scientists thought that the ants were moving together in a synchronized way, which made the waves.

How Many Ants Are Moving

To understand how the ants were behaving the researchers looked at something called “number fluctuations”. This means how many ants are in an area compared to the average.

In systems like air in a box the fluctuations are small and predictable.. The fire ants were different. The fluctuations were much bigger than expected.

The researchers found out that in the cluster phase the fluctuations happened because the ants were making groups. In the moving phase the fluctuations happened because the ants were moving in the same direction as the ants near them. This is similar to how birds and fish behave.

Do The Ants Align Together

The researchers think that the ants are aligning together to make the waves. They are not sure yet. One reason is that the area they were studying was too small.

Different groups of ants might be moving in ways, which would cancel out the overall pattern. Also the moving phase did not last very long so it was hard to get enough data.

So the study shows that alignment is important for ants behavior.

Why This Is Important

This study helps us understand how simple rules can make patterns. It can also help us make models for active matter systems.

It could also inspire technologies in robotics, swarm intelligence and materials that can organize themselves. Engineers often look at nature to see how simple things can work together without being controlled.
