Some scientists who study the tiny things that make up atoms found a new rule that nobody knew about before. They did an experiment at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The scientists were looking at something called short-range correlations. This is when two tiny particles, like a proton and a neutron stick together for a short time inside the atom. Special Atoms Called Magic Nuclei

To figure this out the scientists looked at some atoms called magic nuclei. These atoms have an arrangement of protons and neutrons that makes them easier to study. The scientists chose a few of these atoms like Calcium-40 and Calcium-48 to see how the particles inside them work together.

They also looked at an atom called Iron-54. This atom has the number of neutrons as Calcium-48 but it has more protons. The scientists wanted to see how the extra protons would affect the particles inside the atom.

The scientists did not get the results they expected. They thought that the extra neutrons in Calcium-48 would make proton-neutron pairs but it did not. They also thought that the extra protons in Iron-54 would make a number of pairs but it made more than that.

A New Rule For Protons and Neutrons

When the scientists looked at all the results together they found an explanation. The important thing was not just how particles there were but how they were arranged inside the atom. The particles that were close together in the shell worked together really well but the particles that were far apart in different shells did not.

The scientists found that the extra neutrons in Calcium-48 were in a shell than the protons so they did not work together as well. But the extra protons in Iron-54 were in the shell as the neutrons so they worked together really well. This is a rule that nobody knew about before.

The scientists are very excited about this discovery. They think it will help us understand how atoms work and how the tiny things inside them interact. They also think it could have implications for areas of science like particle physics and astrophysics.
