Australia’s rainforests have shown us a really cool spider species. Scientists found a spider at night in North Queensland. It uses a silk trap to catch just one kind of ant. They call it the “Ballista Spider” because it uses a trap like a Roman weapon. This weapon used stored energy to launch things.
The discovery is an example of how animals can change to become super good at catching one type of food.
One Target
Most spiders catch many kinds of insects. The Ballista Spider only catches one kind of ant. Researchers found that it hunts the tree ant or Oecophylla smaragdina.
This ant is super aggressive. It can release bad chemicals. It can also call its friends to attack. Because of this not many animals try to catch it.
Scientists think the spider developed a plan to catch these ants safely. By attacking them directly it uses a trap to catch them from far away.
Building the Trap
During the day the spider hides under leaves near trails. At night it starts building its trap.
The spider goes down more than half a meter and creates an anchor point. Then it builds a cone-shaped bundle with 15 to 60 silk lines. These lines store energy like a spring.
When it’s done the spider wraps it in silk and retreats to a safe place.
Researchers think the spider might add a smell to the trap. This smell might attract tree ants and make them angry. When an ant bites the trap it sets it off.
Fast Capture
When the ant bites through the point the trap launches upward fast. It carries the ant into the spider’s web. Videos showed that the ant can be launched upward fast. It goes over 30 centimeters into the air before getting stuck in the web. Only when the ant is stuck does the spider approach. It then wraps the ant in silk. Get ready to eat it. Scientists say this trap is one of the most powerful in nature. Unlike spider webs this trap is triggered by the prey.
Evolutionary Marvel
To understand the trap researchers looked at the spider’s silk. They found that it’s special and can store a lot of energy.
The spider’s plan is safe. It catches ants instead of confronting the whole colony.
Researchers say this might be the spider that only catches one kind of prey. It’s also rare in nature for the prey to set off its trap.
The discovery shows how diverse hunting strategies are in nature. The Ballista Spider is an example of how animals can change over millions of years. Its trap might be one of the advanced hunting systems in the animal kingdom.
