Bats are really hunters. They do not use their eyes like other animals. Instead bats use sound to find their way and catch prey when it is completely dark. This is called echolocation. It is an ability that lets them send out high pitched sounds and listen for the echoes to figure out what is around them.
Hunting with sound is not easy. There is a lot of noise in the forests and other places where bats live. There are echoes bouncing off trees, leaves and things that are moving. For bats it is hard to hear the sound of a small insect flying around in all that noise.
Some researchers from Doshisha University in Japan found out something about greater Japanese horseshoe bats. They learned that these bats have a trick to help them catch prey. The study, which was published in Communications Biology shows that bats do not just listen to the echoes. They actually change the frequencies to make a “silent zone” that helps them hear prey better.
This is a deal because it helps us understand how smart animals are. It might even help us make radar, sonar and wireless technologies.
Understanding Echolocation
Echolocation works by sending out pitched sound waves that bounce off things and come back to the bat. By listening to these echoes bats can tell how away things are, how big they are and if they are moving.
One big problem bats have when they are flying is the Doppler effect. This is when the sound of the echoes changes because the bat is moving and the things around it are moving too.
To solve this problem horseshoe bats use something called Doppler Shift Compensation. This means they change the sound of their calls so that the echoes come back in a range that they can hear well.
Scientists used to think this was a way for bats to make sure they can hear things clearly.. Now they think there might be more to it.
Testing The Bats
Some researchers, led by a student named Soshi Yoshida, did some experiments with 11 Japanese horseshoe bats.
They used echoes that they could control to see how the bats would change their calls. They also put microphones on the bats when they were flying to record the real echoes. They even used moths that were tied down to study the sounds of their wings beating.
They did experiments with different kinds of background noise to see how the bats would react.
Creating Silent Zones
What they found out was really cool. Bats change their calls so that the pitched echoes always stay at the same frequency.
This makes a silent zone” above that frequency. In this zone there are no echoes from trees or other things around them.
This makes it easier for the bats to hear the sounds of insects flying. The researchers found out that this silent zone is really important for the bats to catch prey. When they added noise to the zone the bats had a harder time catching insects.
When they added noise outside the silent zone it did not affect the bats as much.
This shows that the silent zone is not a coincidence. It is a way that bats use to focus on the sounds they need to hear and ignore the rest.
Beyond Nature
This study shows how smart and adaptable bats are. They do not just use their brains to filter out sounds. They actually change the way they use sound to make it easier to hear what they need to.
The researchers think this could help us make technologies. Many systems, like radar and sonar, have trouble detecting signals in environments.
The way bats use sound could inspire technologies that make their own “silent zones” to improve signal detection.
