Parkinson’s disease is a problem. It is getting worse fast. This disease makes it hard for people to move, balance. even think. It affects a lot of people. Simple things like knowing someone’s face or making a decision can become hard to do.

Scientists think that by 2050 a lot of people will have Parkinson’s disease. This happens when some cells in the brain get damaged. These cells help us move and think. When they get damaged we have problems.

When we have Parkinson’s disease we might. Move slowly. It also affects our memory. How we think.

Some scientists from Chonnam National University Hospital in South Korea found something. They found that drinking coffee might help people with Parkinson’s disease.

Coffee And The Brain

Some other studies already showed that caffeine and nicotine might help prevent Parkinson’s disease. These scientists wanted to know if these things could also help people who already have the disease.

The new study looked at 149 people with Parkinson’s disease. None of them had serious brain problems. The scientists wanted to know how coffee these people drank and if they smoked.

They also checked how bad Parkinson’s disease was. They did tests to see how well people could think and move.

One of the tests was called the Go/No- test. This test checks if people can stop themselves from doing something

Surprising Results

At first it seemed like people who drank coffee and smoked did better on the tests.. Then the scientists realized that the coffee drinkers were younger and smarter. The smokers were mostly men and also smarter.

When they took this into account they found that smoking did not really help.. Coffee still seemed to help.

People who drank coffee did better on the Go/No-Go test. They also did better on math problems. Could control themselves better.

The scientists think that caffeine might help the brain work better. It might even help protect the brain cells.

Why Coffee Helps

The scientists believe that caffeine might help the brain cells by making them work better. Since Parkinson’s disease hurts these cells caffeine might make things a little better.

Coffee might also reduce inflammation and stress in the brain. These things are bad for the brain.

It is interesting that nicotine also seemed to help prevent Parkinson’s disease. This study shows that smoking is not good for people who already have the disease.

The scientists say that smoking is bad for our health and we should not do it.

Careful Optimism

The results are good. We should not think that coffee can cure Parkinson’s disease.

The study only found that coffee helps with some things like controlling ourselves. The scientists need to do studies to see how coffee really helps.

This study shows that small things we do every day might help our brain.

The scientists say that we should take care of ourselves by sleeping, eating well and exercising. Coffee might be one of the things that helps.

For now the scientists think that drinking coffee might help a bit. We need to do more research.
