Scientists have found a way to treat Alzheimer’s disease by using a bad brain chemical to help activate a medicine that only works where it is needed. This new way of treating Alzheimer’s disease was discovered by scientists at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology. They think this new treatment could be safer and more effective for people with Alzheimer’s disease and other brain diseases.

The scientists wrote about their discovery in a journal called Small. They found a way to make a kind of medicine that only works when it meets a bad molecule called hydrogen peroxide. This bad molecule is often found in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s disease. When the scientists tested this medicine on animals they found that it helped reduce bad brain changes and improved the animals memory and learning abilities.

A Kind Of Medicine

Most medicines for Alzheimer’s disease can affect both healthy and sick parts of the brain which can cause bad side effects. To solve this problem the scientists created a kind of medicine called a prodrug. A prodrug is a medicine that’s not active when it goes into the body but it becomes active when it meets certain conditions inside the body. In this case the scientists made the medicine active when it meets hydrogen peroxide.

The scientists made two medicines called BE-1 and BE-2. These medicines do not work when they are in brain tissue but they become active when they meet high levels of hydrogen peroxide in sick brain tissue. This means the medicine only works where it is needed which reduces the chance of affecting brain cells.

Using A Bad Molecule To Help

Hydrogen peroxide is usually thought of as a molecule because it can damage brain cells and make Alzheimer’s disease worse. The scientists at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology thought of a different way to use it. They used hydrogen peroxide as a signal to activate the medicine. When the medicine is activated it does two things at the same time.

First it reduces the amount of molecules like hydrogen peroxide in the brain which helps reduce stress on the brain. Second it stops a protein called amyloid beta from forming clumps that can kill brain cells and cause memory loss. By doing these two things the scientists think the medicine could slow down the progression of Alzheimer’s disease effectively than other treatments.

Testing The New Medicine

The scientists tested the medicine on animals with Alzheimer’s disease. They used tools to study the brain and see how the medicine worked. The results showed that the medicine changed the shape of the amyloid beta protein, which stopped it from forming clumps. The medicine also crossed the blood-brain barrier, which’s a protective wall that keeps many medicines from getting into the brain.

When the medicine got into the brain it only worked in the areas where hydrogen peroxide levels were high. The scientists found that the medicine reduced stress on the brain and stopped amyloid beta from accumulating. The animals that got the medicine also did better on tests that measured their memory and learning abilities.

A New Way To Treat Brain Diseases

This new way of treating Alzheimer’s disease could also be used to treat brain diseases. Many brain diseases, including Parkinson’s disease involve levels of bad molecules and abnormal protein accumulation. The scientists think that the same strategy could be used to treat these diseases. By making medicines that only work in tissue scientists could create treatments that are more effective and have fewer side effects.

A New Direction For Brain Therapy

The scientists who worked on this project think that it changes the way we think about molecules in disease. Of just trying to get rid of hydrogen peroxide we can use it as a signal to activate medicines. The scientists believe that this new way of activating medicines could be a new platform for treating complex brain diseases safely and efficiently.

Although more research is needed before this medicine can be used to treat people the results are exciting. Could lead to new treatments for Alzheimer’s disease. If the results are confirmed in humans this new strategy could lead to treatments that slow down the progression of Alzheimer’s disease, preserve function and improve the quality of life for people with dementia.
