Coral reefs around the world are in big trouble. The ocean is getting warmer. This is causing more heat waves in the sea. When this happens corals get very stressed. Often turn white. This is called bleaching. Many reefs get badly damaged. Some seem to survive better than others. A new study in Scientific Reports says that the secret to their survival might be climate patterns that help cool the water.

Researchers at MARUM – Center for Marine Environmental Sciences at the University of Bremen looked at ocean data and coral skeletons. They found out that big climate systems in the Indo-Pacific Ocean can bring water to reefs. This helps them survive heat.

Corals Keep Track of Climate

The study looked at a reef in the Andaman Sea. This reef gets water from deeper in the ocean. This cooler water helps the corals survive.

To understand how this cooling works researchers looked at skeletons. Corals grow layer by layer like tree rings. By measuring chemicals scientists can tell what the ocean temperature was like in the past.

Climate Helps Protect Reefs

The researchers found out that the cooling is linked to climate systems. These are the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD). These climate events affect wind patterns and ocean circulation. This in turn affects how much cool water gets to the reefs.

One big example was the 1997–1998 El Niño. This was an event that happened with a big Indian Ocean Dipole. During this time cool water was able to reach the reef. This helped the corals survive even though it was one of the global coral bleaching events ever.

Corals Adapt When Stressed

The study also showed how corals change when they are stressed. Normally corals get energy from algae that live inside them. When they are stressed they lose these algae and have to find other food sources.

The researchers found out that during bleaching events corals started eating more tiny food particles from the seawater. During the 1998 heat wave this did not happen as much. Scientists think this is because the cooling helped the corals survive without having to change their behavior.

This means that natural cooling not only helps lower the water temperature but also helps corals keep their normal relationship with the algae.

Future of Coral Refuges

The study says that reefs that get cooling are not always safe. Their ability to protect corals from heat depends on changing climate conditions. As the climate changes the effectiveness of these refuges also changes.

Understanding this is important because heat waves are becoming more common. By finding reefs that get cooling from waters scientists can predict which coral ecosystems are most likely to survive.

The study offers a way to think about coral conservation. It shows that reef resilience is influenced by both ocean processes and big climate systems. This can help guide conservation strategies to protect ecosystems in a changing climate.
