You know how two people can be at the event but remember it in totally different ways? Like one person might recall a family gathering as fun and comforting while another person remembers it as really stressful. Even though they both experienced the thing, their memories can feel completely different.

Scientists have known for a time that our brains don’t work like video recorders. We don’t store events exactly as they happen. Instead our brains interpret what happens and create our versions of events. These interpretations are influenced by how we feel, what we pay attention to our experiences and our individual perspectives.

A new study by researchers from the University of Toronto, McGill University and the University of California Davis has provided insights into how these personal memories are formed and stored in the brain.

Watching The Same Story

To study memory differences researchers looked at data from 24 people who watched the animated videos while getting fMRI scans. This technology measures brain activity by tracking changes in blood flow.

After watching the videos people were asked to recall and describe what they remembered.

Even though everyone viewed the content, their recollections varied.

The research team wanted to know if people who remembered events similarly also showed brain activity patterns.

They combined brain imaging with artificial intelligence tools that can analyze language.

This approach lets researchers compare both people’s memories and the brain activity associated with those memories.

AI Meets Neuroscience

One of the things about the study was the use of natural language processing (NLP) , a type of artificial intelligence that analyzes human language. The AI models looked at peoples descriptions of the videos and turned them into mathematical representations. These representations helped researchers measure how similar or different people’s memories were.

Of just comparing words the AI identified deeper themes and topics in each person’s recollection. This provided an accurate picture of how people interpreted and remembered events.

By combining these memory measurements with brain imaging data researchers could explore the relationship between memory similarity and brain activity patterns. The results showed a connection between how people remember events and how their brains process them.

Shared Brain Patterns

The study found that people who remembered the videos in ways also had similar brain activity patterns. These similarities appeared not while people were watching the videos but also later when they were recalling them from memory.

Researchers focused on the brain’s Default Mode Network (DMN) , a group of regions that become active during daydreaming, imagination, self-reflection and memory recall. The DMN has long been associated with constructing narratives and interpreting experiences.

The new findings suggest that it also plays a role in shaping how people remember shared events.

When two people formed memories their DMN activity patterns were more closely aligned. This indicates that memory is not about storing information but also about how the brain interprets and organizes experiences.

The stronger the similarity in memory content the the similarity in brain activity patterns observed among participants.

Key Brain Regions

The researchers identified three brain regions that seemed particularly important in shaping personal memories. The first was the medial cortex, a region involved in organizing events and integrating information over time. The second was the prefrontal cortex, which helps process personal meaning and social information.

The third was the temporal cortex, a region linked to knowledge, concepts and understanding experiences. These areas showed the neural similarities among people who remembered the videos in comparable ways.

The findings suggest that these regions work together to create interpretations of events and transform experiences into personal memories.

Beyond revealing how memories are formed the study also shows the growing value of intelligence in neuroscience research. By combining AI language analysis with brain imaging scientists can gain insights into complex mental processes that were previously difficult to measure.

Ultimately the research highlights a powerful truth: people do not merely remember events—they interpret them.
