Whale sharks are the fish on Earth they can grow up to 18 meters long and weigh several tons. These gentle giants mostly eat organisms like plankton and krill. They are one of the ocean’s iconic and endangered species. Every year thousands of tourists and researchers want to see them.
Scientists only knew a little bit about their lives. They used to watch whale sharks from boats or while snorkeling. When the sharks swam into the water the researchers could not see them anymore. So a lot of their behavior was a mystery.
A new study in Marine Biology changed that. They put camera tags on whale sharks. The footage from these cameras shows how these big fish find food in the water. It even shows behaviors that nobody had seen before.
Camera Mission
To learn what whale sharks do under the water researchers put camera tags on them. These tags had a video camera and sensors that recorded how the sharks moved, how deep they swam and their swimming patterns.
The scientists attached these tags to the sharks dorsal fins while they were snorkeling with them in the waters near Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia.
The sharks just kept swimming like they always do. They did not seem to mind the equipment on them. After 24 hours the tags came off. Floated to the surface. Then the researchers could pick them up without bothering the sharks. These camera tags were better than the tracking devices. They did not just show where the sharks moved, they showed what the sharks were doing. The footage was like seeing the world from a whale shark’s point of view.
Feeding Secrets
The researchers used the videos and the movement data to identify 36 things that whale sharks do. This is the list of whale shark behaviors ever made. One big discovery was that whale sharks eat food all the way from the surface to the bottom of the ocean. They even eat food from the seafloor, which’s 70 meters deep. Before scientists thought whale sharks only ate near the surface. Now we know they use different ways to find food depending on where it is. Sometimes they chase krill near the surface. Sometimes they just glide to the bottom with their mouths open. They filter organisms from the water without using a lot of energy.
Smart Strategy
The researchers found out that whale sharks use low-energy ways to find food most of the time. They just cruise through the water. Filter small amounts of food all the time. It is like when we eat snacks while we wait for a meal. When they find a lot of food like a swarm of krill they start eating more actively. This way of eating helps them survive in oceans where food is not always easy to find. Whale sharks can eat in different ways, which is more than other big filter-feeding animals. This helps them thrive in waters where food is always changing.
Future Research
Even though this study was a breakthrough it only looked at young whale sharks in one place near Ningaloo Reef. The scientists want to put camera tags on whale sharks in places around the world. This could show them ways that whale sharks find food to migrate and interact with each other.
The study also shows how useful modern technology is for studying animals. It is very important to understand how whale sharks find food and adapt to the changing ocean. This will help us protect this species. As the ocean gets warmer and climate change affects ecosystems we need to know more about whale sharks feeding behavior.
This will help us find the habitats that’re most important for their survival.
For the time scientists got to see the secret lives of the world’s largest fish under the water.
What they found is an animal that is very good at adapting and always looking for its next meal.
