The Atlantic bluefin tuna is making a comeback. This is a good thing because the species was in big trouble in the early 2000s. Scientists think that the reason for this comeback is not just because of fishing rules but also because the tuna are traveling long distances across the Atlantic Ocean.
For a time people were overfishing the Atlantic bluefin tuna. This made the population very small. It was close to collapsing. The tuna were worth a lot of money so people were fishing them a lot. Then in the early 2000s people started to get worried and made some rules to protect the tuna. They made it so that people could not fish much in the Mediterranean Sea.
These rules helped to stop the population from getting smaller. Now scientists are saying that the tuna’s behavior is also a big part of why they are coming back.
Short-term decline
The scientists found out that some Atlantic bluefin tuna like to travel from the side of the Atlantic to the west side to eat food. They like to eat along the coasts of the United States and Canada. These areas have fishing rules so they are like safe places for the tuna to eat.
This is important because it means that the tuna are not just staying in one area. They are moving around. Eating in different places. This helps them to grow and have babies. The scientists used tags to track the tuna and see where they were going. They put these tags on over 1,700 fish.
Hidden migration patterns
The tags told the scientists where the tuna were, how deep they were swimming and what the water temperature was. This helped the scientists to make maps of where the tuna were going. Where they were having babies. They found out that the tuna were crossing the Atlantic Ocean a lot. They would eat in one place. Have babies in another.
For example some tuna would have babies in the Mediterranean Sea. Then swim to North America to eat. Then they would go back to the Mediterranean to have babies. This shows that the tuna are all connected and are not just living in groups.
Mixing across the ocean
Understanding how the tuna move around is important for people who manage the fisheries. Now the rules say that there are two separate groups of tuna: one in the east and one in the west. If the tuna are really all connected then these rules might not be working very well.
The scientists think that the rules need to be changed so that they take into account the life cycle of the tuna. They also think that protected areas, like the ones, in North America are very important. These areas have fishing rules, which helps the tuna to grow and have babies.
Looking ahead
The Atlantic bluefin tuna is a special fish. It can swim deep and stay warm in cold water. It can also travel far to find food. The North Atlantic Ocean has a lot of food for tuna like herring and mackerel. This helps the tuna to grow big and strong which makes it more likely that they will have babies.
Looking to the future the scientists think that we need to make sure that we are not fishing much in any one area. We also need to protect the places where the tuna like to eat and have babies. If we do this we can help the Atlantic bluefin tuna to keep coming
The story of the Atlantic bluefin tuna shows that science and policy can work together to help the environment. The strict rules helped. The tuna’s natural behavior was also very important. By understanding how the tuna move around and connect with each other we can make plans to protect them and other fish like them.
