Wolves are really good at living in places, like forests, mountains and even cold Arctic regions. They are the species but a new study found out that wolves from different parts of the world are not exactly the same. Their skulls are shapes and sizes because of the weather, the food they eat and how they have changed over time and also because of what people have done.
The people who did this study are from the University of Oulu in Finland. They wrote about it in Diversity and Distributions. They found out that the weather and what people have done have changed wolf populations in Europe, Asia and North America.
Global Study
To learn more about these differences the researchers looked at 227 wolf skulls from Europe, Asia and North America. They used machines to take very detailed pictures of the skulls and lower jaws.
They found out that wolf skulls are different in parts of the world. The weather, the food they eat and the place they live explain a lot of these differences.
The person in charge of the study Dominika Bujnáková said that wolves have changed over time to fit in with their surroundings. They changed their skull shape to hunt. Eat the food that is available in their area.
Natures Influence
The weather is very important in shaping wolf skulls. Wolves that live in places are different from wolves that live in warm places.
The food they eat also changes their skull shape. Wolves that hunt animals have stronger jaws and broader skulls. Wolves that eat animals have different skull shapes that help them hunt.
These changes help wolves survive in places from cold Arctic regions to forests and mountains. The study found out that the weather and the place they live have changed wolf skulls over thousands of years.
Human Impact
The study also found out that what people have done has changed wolf skulls a lot in the past two hundred years.
A time ago people hunted wolves in Europe and North America and many wolf populations disappeared. Later some wolves came back to these areas. They were different from the wolves that lived there before.
People also built houses and roads. This stopped wolves from moving around. This made wolf populations more isolated. They became more different from each other.
The researchers found out that what people did a time ago still affects wolf skulls today.
Finland Example
This is especially true in Finland and Scandinavia. A time ago wolves in these areas almost disappeared, but then they came back from other places. Even though the wolf population recovered, the time when there were almost no wolves still affects their skull shape today.
The study found out that when wolves come back to an area the changes that happened when their population was small can still be seen for a long time.
Museums helped the researchers a lot because they had wolf skulls that were collected a long time ago. This allowed the researchers to compare new wolf populations and see how they have changed over time.
Conservation Lessons
The study teaches us something about how to protect wolves. When we try to help wolf populations grow we need to think about the characteristics of each group of wolves. If we move wolves from one place to another without thinking about their differences they might not survive.
The researchers say that we should not just focus on making wolf populations bigger but on keeping the special characteristics that each group of wolves has developed over time. The study shows us that wolves have changed because of the weather, the food they eat and what people have done. We need to understand how all these things affect wolves so we can protect them better.
By understanding these things we can make plans to protect wolves that will really work and help them survive for a long time.
