The field of soft robotics and smart electronic devices is growing really fast. This means we need materials that can do lots of things and then disappear when they are done. These technologies are being used more and more in places like health care, taking care of the environment, checking on buildings and keeping people safe. So researchers are trying to find ways to make sure devices do not become trash when they are finished working.
Lots of robots are designed to work in places that’re hard or dangerous for people to get to. These places include pipes, factories, areas that are bad for people and small spaces. While robots can do a job checking and fixing things in these places it can be really hard or expensive to get them back. If we leave them there they can hurt the environment, break things or show information.
To solve this problem some researchers at Seoul National University made a material that can move and disappear using magnets. This is a deal and could lead to a new kind of robot and secure electronic devices.
Need For Self-Disappearing Smart Devices
Soft robots and electronic devices usually need separate parts to move and break down. This makes them complicated and hard to use in dark places. Scientists have been looking for a way to do both things with one material.
The team of researchers led by Professor Seung-Kyun Kang made a magnetic material that can do both things without touching it. Their study shows a material that can move when needed and then break down completely without needing any equipment.
How The Magnetic Elastomer Works
This new material is made from a silicone material with magnetic particles called Fe3O4. These particles do two things.
When they are near a current magnetic field the particles help the material change shape and move. This means the material can work like a robot and bend, stretch and move in a controlled way.
When they are near a kind of magnetic field the particles get really hot. This heat is made by something called resonance and it makes the material get very hot very fast.
Switching Between Motion And Degradation
One of the things about this material is that it can switch between moving and breaking down using different magnetic signals. When the researchers tested it the material got hotter than 200 degrees Celsius in one second.
This heat breaks the bonds in the material making it break down quickly. This is different from systems that need external heat or light to work.
Even though it can break down the material is still very strong when it is working normally. It can stretch a lot without breaking, which makes it good for robots.
Successful Tests In Robotics And Electronics
The researchers tried out the technology with some experiments. They made a robot that could move using magnets and then break down when they wanted it to.
In another test they used the material to make a switch that could control lights. This shows that it could be used for electronic devices that can get rid of themselves after they are done.
These tests showed that one material can do lots of things: move, work and disappear.
Future Applications For Vanishing Machines
This technology could lead to some cool things in the future. Soft robots could go through pipes, fix blockages and then disappear without needing to be retrieved. Robots that explore places could do their jobs without making trash or needing to be rescued.
Secure electronic devices could also use this material to get rid of parts after they are used. This could be really useful for defense keeping people online and secret information.
Researchers think this is a step towards making materials that can think about their whole life cycle. By putting movement and break-down into one material it makes designing systems easier. Gives robots and electronic devices more capabilities.
As people keep working on this, self-disappearing machines might become a solution, for places where it is hard or expensive to get things back.
