The human brain is really good at adapting to things. It can learn skills and get used to new environments. The brain can even change the way it works after someone gets hurt. Scientists have known for a time that the brain can get used to tools and fake limbs but a new study says it can do even more than that.
Researchers in China wanted to see if the brain could think of fake body parts as real parts of the body. They found out that after people practiced in reality the brain started to think of virtual wings as if they were real arms.
This study is really interesting because it shows how technology could change the way people think about their bodies and machines in the future.
Flying in VR
To test their idea researchers made a virtual reality world and got 25 people to try it out for a week. These people wore headsets and had sensors on their arms. In the world they could control a pair of wings with their arm movements. When they moved their arms the wings would flap like they were really flying.
The people in the study practiced flying for a week. They learned how to make the wings go up and down and how to move their bodies to steer. They even practiced flying through hoops and blocking balls with their wings.
The goal was to make the people feel like the wings were really a part of their bodies.
Brain Changes
To see if the practice changed the brain researchers took pictures of the brain before and after the study.
They looked at a part of the brain that helps us see and understand our bodies. After a week of practice they found that the brain was working differently. When people looked at pictures of wings their brain reacted differently than it did before.
The brain was starting to think of the wings as if they were arms.
The researchers also found that different parts of the brain were talking to each other more. This means that the brain was trying to make the wings a part of the body.
Beyond Illusion
The study shows that our brain is really flexible. It can think of body parts as real if they move with our body and do something useful. The brain does not just think about what our body looks like. We can get used to things if they help us do something.
The study shows that our brain can combine what we feel and how we move to think of something as a part of our body. Even though people cannot really grow wings, the virtual reality world made it feel enough for the brain to start adapting.
Future Possibilities
Scientists think this study could be important for more than virtual reality games. It could help people who need limbs. If the brain can get used to wings it might also get used to robotic limbs.
This could make it easier for people to use limbs and make them feel more like real body parts. The study could also help us make technologies that work with our brain. This could change the way we interact with machines in the future.
For now flying with wings is just a virtual reality thing. The study shows that our brain is really flexible and can adapt to new things. It might be possible for people to get used to body parts or abilities that we thought were just science fiction.
