For a time people have been talking about how important it is to reduce the number of mothers who die during or after childbirth. There is another issue that is not getting enough attention: paternal mortality. This is when fathers die, because of things that could have been prevented. Researchers at Northwestern University have been studying this problem. They found some disturbing trends.
A Crisis That Is Not Well Known
The researchers looked at what happened to fathers in the state of Georgia after their children were born. They studied 130,267 births. Found that 796 fathers died over the next five years. What is really alarming is that 60% of these deaths were caused by things that could have been prevented. These things include being murdered, getting hurt by accident, killing themselves and overdosing on drugs. These are not just problems but also problems that are linked to how people live their lives and the society they live in.
Deaths That Could Have Been Prevented
The researchers found that 143 fathers were murdered, 142 died from accidents, 102 killed themselves and 93 died from overdoses. On the other hand 296 fathers died from natural causes. This shows that many of these deaths could have been avoided if there were support systems and more awareness. The researchers think that this is a mistake and that it is a chance to prevent deaths that are being missed.
Unlike what happens when mothers die there is no system in place to track and study the deaths of fathers. This means that we do not know enough about why these deaths happen and how they could be prevented.
A Big Gap In Public Health
The researchers are saying that this lack of attention is a problem. There are systems in place to investigate when mothers die after childbirth. There is nothing like that for fathers. This means that we do not understand the patterns and risk factors and we are missing chances to save lives and help families.
The study suggests that when men become fathers it is a time to identify and address risks. This is a time of change emotionally, financially and socially.
Being A Father Can Be
The research also found that being a father can actually help men live longer. Across all age groups over 20 fathers had death rates than men who were not fathers. For example, among men aged 30 to 34 fathers had a death rate of 120 per 100,000 while non-fathers had a higher rate of 231 per 100,000. This could be because being a father makes men behave in ways or gives them a sense of purpose.
Who Is Most At Risk
The study found that some fathers are more likely to die than others. Younger fathers are more likely to die from things that’re not natural, like violence or accidents. Other risk factors include not being married, living in areas not having much education and relying on Medicaid. Non- Black fathers are also more likely to die.
On the other hand , fathers with more education, Hispanic fathers and fathers with access to certain healthcare programs are less likely to die.
The Impact On Families
When a father dies it has an impact on the children and the family. We know that when fathers are involved in their children’s lives the children are healthier emotionally stable and do better overall.. When a father dies, especially suddenly or because of something that could have been prevented it can lead to long-term problems, like economic hardship, emotional distress and developmental challenges.
Why Data Is Important
One of the problems in addressing mortality is that we do not have enough data. We need to be able to link birth and death records. This is difficult because of privacy restrictions and limitations in the data. The study in Georgia was possible because the researchers had access to data at the state level.
Looking To The Future
The findings of this study are calling for a change in how public health approaches parenthood. Like maternal health is a priority we need to start recognizing and addressing the risks that fathers face. We could have programs to support health, prevent substance abuse, reduce violence and provide broader social support for new parents.
Paternal mortality is an issue that affects not only fathers, but entire families. By talking about this problem researchers hope to encourage action and the development of systems that can identify risks and prevent deaths that could have been avoided. We need to recognize the challenges that fathers face when they become parents and take steps to build families and communities. Paternal mortality is a health crisis that needs attention and we need to start taking it seriously.
