A new study from Sweden has shown that the vitamin K injection given to newborn babies shortly after birth is very important for saving lives. The researchers found out that even though only a small number of parents say no to the shot, the number of newborns who do not get this treatment has more than doubled in the last 15 years.
The vitamin K shot is given to babies to help prevent bleeding problems. The study, which was published in JAMA, found that babies who do not get the vitamin K injection are at a higher risk of getting bleeding disorders including bleeding inside the brain. This is a serious condition that can cause permanent damage or even death.
The research looked at more than 2 million babies born in Sweden between 2003 and 2021. This makes it one of the studies ever done on newborn vitamin K protection. The scientists think that the results should make people more aware of why this simple injection’s so important for newborn babies.
Why It Matters
Vitamin K is necessary for the body to form blood clots. It helps the blood clot after an injury. Newborn babies do not have vitamin K because they do not get much from their mother during pregnancy. After birth breast milk does not have vitamin K and babies have not yet developed the gut bacteria they need to make their own vitamin K.
Because of this newborn babies are at risk of getting Vitamin K Deficiency Bleeding (VKDB). VKDB can happen within days or weeks after birth. Can cause severe internal bleeding. The vitamin K injection helps prevent this condition. Doctors recommend that newborn babies get a vitamin K injection shortly after delivery.
This injection gives lasting protection during the time when babies are most vulnerable. The vitamin K shot is very important for protecting babies from life-threatening bleeding.
Study Findings
The researchers looked at Swedish health records covering more than 2 million live births. They found that approximately 24,000 babies did not get the recommended vitamin K injection. The researchers then followed each child’s history for the first six months of life to see if any bleeding disorders developed.
The results showed a difference between babies who got the injection and those who did not. Infants who did not get the vitamin K shot were 1.5 times more likely to get bleeding during their first six months. They were also three times more likely to get intracranial hemorrhage or bleeding inside the brain.
The highest risk was during the first 28 days after birth when newborns are naturally most vulnerable. The vitamin K injection is very important for protecting babies during this time.
Injection vs Drops
Some parents who said no to the injection chose oral vitamin K drops instead. The oral treatment requires one dose at birth followed by doses for approximately 12 weeks. Although the drops give some protection the researchers found that they were not as effective as the injection.
Babies who got drops still had more than twice the risk of bleeding compared to babies who got the vitamin K injection. The scientists think that this is because oral treatment depends on repeated dosing. If parents accidentally miss one or more doses the baby’s protection decreases significantly.
In contrast the injection gives protection with just a single dose shortly after birth. Because of its simplicity and effectiveness, medical organizations around the world continue to recommend the injection as an option.
Need for Awareness
The study also found that more and more parents are saying no to the vitamin K injection. In Sweden the percentage of babies not getting the injection rose from 0.66% in 2006 to 1.50% in 2021. The researchers think that growing vaccine hesitancy and health misinformation shared online may be contributing to this trend.
The researchers emphasize that parents need information about the benefits of vitamin K and the serious consequences of refusing it. They also recommend studies to understand why some families decline the injection and whether this decision is connected to refusing other childhood medical treatments.
The findings show that the vitamin K shot is one of the most effective ways to protect newborn babies from life-threatening bleeding. As misinformation continues to spread it is very important to educate parents and improve communication with them to make sure more babies get this protection. The vitamin K shot is an effective way to protect newborn babies and it is very important that parents understand its importance.
