Astronomers think they have found a clue about where the universe’s high-energy neutrinos come from. They believe that Little Red Dot galaxies could be making some of these particles that come to Earth from away in space.

The people who did this study looked at what the James Webb Space Telescope saw. It found thousands of far away red galaxies that are very old. These Little Red Dot galaxies might have black holes inside them that are covered in gas and dust. This could be a place for making high-energy neutrinos without making other kinds of radiation that we can see.

What Are Little Red Dots?

Little Red Dots are red galaxies that the James Webb Space Telescope found when it was looking at the far away universe. These galaxies are very old; they were made billions of years ago. Astronomers think that many of these galaxies have growing black holes in the middle. These black holes are different from others because they do not send out strong radio waves or X-rays. This is because the black holes are covered in gas and dust which stops the radiation from getting out.

These galaxies are very common in the universe so scientists think they might be making a lot of cosmic particles like neutrinos.

Solving the Neutrino Mystery

Neutrinos are strange particles. They do not have mass, they do not have an electric charge and they can travel a long way through space without hitting anything. Every second millions of neutrinos go through the Earth and our bodies without us knowing.

Scientists have found that there are high-energy neutrinos coming from all directions in space. They do not know where they come from. Normally when high-energy particles hit particles or photons they make neutrinos and gamma rays. Scientists have seen that there are not as many gamma rays as they thought there would be if we knew where all the neutrinos came from.

This means that the places that make neutrinos must be trapping gamma rays and letting neutrinos go free.

Hidden Black Holes Could Be the Answer

Some scientists think that Little Red Dot galaxies might be the answer. They think that the big black holes in these galaxies are covered in gas and dust that have a lot of photons. When high-energy particles hit this material they make neutrinos. Because neutrinos do not interact much with matter they can escape the galaxy. Gamma rays get trapped in the gas and dust and lose their energy.

This makes Red Dot galaxies like factories that make neutrinos but we cannot see them because they do not send out much radiation.

Testing the Theory

To see if this idea is correct the scientists used math models. Looked at the Little Red Dot galaxies. They tried to figure out how bright these galaxies are, how many there are and what they are made of. Then they did computer simulations to see how particles interact with each other and with the holes.

The simulations showed that if particles are accelerated near the holes in these galaxies they could make a lot of high-energy neutrinos without making gamma rays. This is what scientists see in the universe so it is possible that Little Red Dot galaxies are making some of the neutrinos that come to the Earth.

Future Observations

The scientists think that they need to do work to confirm that Little Red Dot galaxies are making high-energy neutrinos. They want to look at the kinds of neutrinos that these galaxies might make and see how the black holes get covered in gas and dust.

It is very hard to look at Little Red Dot galaxies because they are so far away and do not send out much radiation. The scientists think that these galaxies are important and might be the key to solving the mystery of the universe’s high-energy neutrinos.

As the James Webb Space Telescope keeps looking at the distant universe and other telescopes collect more data scientists hope to find out if Little Red Dot galaxies are really making some of the most energetic particles in the universe. If they are, it would be a discovery and would help us understand the universe better. Little Red Dot galaxies would not help us solve the mystery of the neutrinos but they would also show us a new kind of cosmic particle accelerator that is hidden in the old universe.
