Immune cell emitting numerous glowing signaling molecules

These immune cells are really good at destroying cells around them. They do this by exploding fast like a bomb. This process happens so quickly that the cell is gone in just a few minutes.

The scientists found these cells in planarian flatworms. These flatworms are special because they can regrow their body if it gets cut into pieces. The scientists think that studying these flatworms can help us learn more about how our immune system works and how we can use that knowledge to make medicines.

The scientists named these immune cells “ruptoblasts” because they explode when they are triggered by a special hormone. This hormone is called activin. Normally, activin helps the flatworms regrow and have babies. When there is too much activity it makes the ruptoblasts explode and kill the bad cells.

Hormone Trigger

The scientists found out about ruptoblasts when they were doing experiments with flatworms. They took parts of flatworms and put them together. The flatworms did not like the parts and tried to get rid of them. Instead of using their normal immune system they used the ruptoblasts to explode and kill the bad cells.
