Shiny silver mercury droplets of various sizes on a black lab bench surface

A team of researchers found out something interesting about how people a long time ago treated leprosy. They were led by Dr. Elena Fiorin. What they found was that people who were buried in cemeteries for leprosy patients had a lot of mercury in their teeth. This was published in the Journal of Archaeological Science. It seems that people then used mercury to treat leprosy.

This is a deal because nobody has ever really looked at mercury in teeth before. Usually people just look at bones or hair. Teeth can tell us a lot about what people were exposed to when they were alive. So this study is really important because it helps us understand how people tried to treat diseases a time ago.

What Is Mercury?

Mercury is a metal that’s bad for you. It is also called quicksilver. A time ago people thought it could help with skin problems and infections like leprosy. They would mix it with oil or fat. Put it on the skin. Since leprosy hurts the skin people thought mercury could help.

The thing about teeth is that they can keep secrets. The hard stuff on teeth, called calculus, can keep pieces of things that people were exposed to. This is really helpful for researchers. They can look at teeth to figure out what people were eating or what kind of medicine they were taking.

Study of Cemeteries

The researchers looked at two cemeteries where leprosy patients were buried. One was in England. The other was in France. They also looked at two cemeteries where people who did not have leprosy were buried. They took samples from 76 people and 45 pieces of dirt from the graves.

What they found was that people who were buried in the leprosy cemeteries had a lot of mercury in their teeth. They did not find mercury in the dirt so it seems like the mercury came from medicine not from the ground.

Evidence of Treatment

One thing that was really interesting was that they found two people buried next to each other. The woman had a lot of mercury in her teeth. The man did not. The dirt around them did not have mercury either. This makes the researchers think that the woman was treated with mercury when she was alive.

They also found that people who had mercury in their teeth were buried in nicer parts of the cemetery. This might mean that richer people had access to medicine.

The researchers think that this study shows that people used mercury on purpose to treat leprosy.

Future Discoveries

This study is important because it shows how useful teeth can be for learning about the past. Usually people just look at bones or hair to learn about diseases or diets. Teeth can tell us a lot.

The researchers want to keep studying to figure out when people started using mercury to treat leprosy. They also want to look at people who had leprosy and people who did not to see if they can learn more about how people treated diseases then.

This study helps us understand how people a time ago tried to treat diseases with the knowledge they had. Even though we know mercury is bad for us now, people thought it was a good idea.

This study is not about old medicine. It also shows how we can use techniques to learn about the past. We can find out secrets that people kept hidden for hundreds of years.
